The concept of the seminar is not new. The seminar comes from the Latin word seminarian which means ‘seed plot’. How apt is the name – as it does sow a seed in the mind of the person attending a seminar.
A seminar is a presentation which is lead by an industry expert on a topic of expertise to raise awareness and drive for a measurable action.
The Indian students currently in college are under tremendous stress than ever before. The advent of the internet and social media has spiked the expectations than it was before. But there is a little anchor to hold on to that expectation apart from grades and entrances. The adding gap between industry and academics is adding to the problem as well.
The media is flooded with reports catering to the low employability rate among Indian professional engineers and the MBA’s but on the other side shows up stories of emerging opportunities in new dimensional areas as robotics, machine learning, AI, cloud and data science.
A seminar can be the ideal missing link that connects the aspiration of the Indian students with the industry demand.
Unlike a presentation or a class, a seminar encourages dialogues between the presenter and the attendees.
The person holding a seminar is an expert or a professional from the area represented in the seminar, hence students attending a seminar may draw loads of values while attending a seminar.
Some key driver for this catalyst are:
a) Exchange of ideas via dialogue: Unlike a presentation or a class, a seminar encourages dialogues between the presenter and the attendees.
b) Out of syllabus is actually cool here: Students can be themselves as often a seminar topic will cover what was not in the syllabus. This opens up window for thoughts.
c) Knowledge and awareness: Seminar can provide awareness and also knowledge on the area being presented. It is common to pick up roadmaps, case studies and use cases which go a long way in building awareness and showing a path for further knowledge gain.
d) Network: Indian students can rope in the soft aspects of networking by attending seminars. These network does not come only from knowing the presenter but also from the audience attending the seminar.
e) Confidence: Seminars in education segment talk about motivation to tap an opportunity. So attending a seminar may do wonder to a student’s confidence.
So the next question comes where can a student from India source for such seminars?
Seminars are widely advertised in company websites under ‘events’ page. Students have to pick up seminars which are targeted at the student diaspora rather than potential clients. The other way is to encourage industry lead speakers to come to the college campus to deliver seminars.
